An audio tour of the Viengxay Caves was launched on 11 November 2, to give visitors an in-depth insight into life in the “Hidden City” that served as the Pathet Lao revolutionary movement’s command center from 1964-1973. The cave complex in northeast Laos’s Houaphanh Province contains leaders’ homes, government offices, temples, markets, schools, hospitals, theaters and factories.
Produced by Narrowcasters on a non-profit basis, the audio tour takes visitors through a cave network that protected some 23,000 people throughout the nine-year American bombardment, and contains interviews with 40 survivors.

The annual Vat Phou Asa Elephant Festival is set for 16-18 January 2010, in Champasak Province’s Kiet Ngong Village. The event kicks off on Saturday, before Sunday’s celebration to honor Champasak’s pachyderms. An early-morning ceremony is followed by an elephant procession with traditional music and dancing, before an elephant baci ritual.
Revelers, who participate in the southern Lao fête in the Xe Pian National Protected Area, can also enjoy an elephant ride on Sunday afternoon before an overnight home stay or lodging nearby. On Monday, the festival’s finale, an alms giving ceremony is held at the mountaintop Phou Asa Temple.
