The Savannakhet Historic Trail:

The Savannakhet Provincial Tourism Department will launch the guidebook Savannakhet Historic Trail in April, 2010. This a 50-page guide provides visitors with a deeper insight into this southern Lao destination that includes the home of Lao PDRs’ first Prime Minister, Kaysone Phomvihane, the sacred That Ing Hang stupa and the famed Ho Chi Minh Trail.

The Savannakhet Historic Trail delves into the province’s distinct history, culture, nature, food and handicrafts. It presents in-depth descriptions of the province’s many attractions and activities, most of which can be experienced on one of the five pre-set, self-guided tour circuits or eight CBT programs operated by the Savannakhet Eco-guide Unit.

Easier Access to Lao Ecotourism:

Getting to Laos’ ecotourism hubs is getting quicker and easier. Construction of the bridge between Chiang Khong, Thailand and Houay Xay, Laos begins in March. Once finished in 2010 the new bridge will quicken overland travel between northern Thailand to Houeixai in Bokeo and further on to Luang Namtha’s famed trekking trails and diverse ethnic groups. Also, a road cutting through the mountains north of Vang Vieng, scheduled for a 2013 launch, is expected to shorten the Vientiane-Luang Prabang trip.

Construction of the new Luang Prabang Airport began in mid-February, and when completed in 2013, will be able to accommodate mid-sized jet aircraft. Also, upgrades to the Pakse International Airport in Champassak Province to accommodate larger jet aircraft are currently underway. Air travel to Pakse is temporarily routed through Savannakhet until early June.

Southeast Asia: Feel the Warmth:

Regional tourism association, ASEANTA, and the ASEAN Competitiveness Enhancement (ACE) project recently launched SoutheastAsia.org. The site presents articles by regional writers including a pair of Lao-based features - “In Love with Luang Prabang” places community-based tourism programs alongside must-see heritage attractions, and The History, Wildlife and Culture of the Mekong discusses Laos’ riverside history, culture and nature along with ecotourism attractions and activities.
