UN Opens Biodiversity Year

In a bid to curb the unprecedented loss of the world's species due to human activity – at a rate some experts put at 1,000 times the natural progression – the United Nations is marking 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, with a range of events highlighting the vital role the phenomenon plays in maintaining the life support system on Earth.

“Humans are part of nature's rich diversity and have the power to protect or destroy it,” said the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which was hosted by the UN Environment Program (UNEP). Biodiversity Year focuses on raising awareness to generate public pressure for action by the world's decision makers.

501 Places Hits Laos

Established UK travel writer, Andy Jarosz, visited Laos in December 2009 for 17 days and covered the eco-journey on his blog, 501 Places, which attracts between 500 and 800 visitors a day. Andy started his adventure following renowned Lonely Planet Tony Wheeler’s northern Laos hike “The 100 Waterfalls Trek” that kicked of in Nong Khiaw. The trail was recently established by Tiger Trails, one of Laos’ top responsible tourism operators based in Luang Prabang. After the arduous hike, Andy then boarded Mekong Cruises’ comfortable “Vat Phou” vessel and sailed south to the UNESCO World Heritage site in Champassak. He ended the eco-adventure at Si Phan Don, visiting villages along the way before heading to Cambodia.
