The Elephant Festival
(February 17-18th 2007, Hongsa, Sayaboury Province.) As a living icon with important symbolic connotations and historical associations in Laos, the elephant is an animal dear to the hearts of the Lao people. Unfortunately, the elephant is today under threat due to loss of forest habitat and to economic and technological changes. In response to these concerns, the Elephant Festival has been organized to raise awareness of the need for action to protect the Asian elephant as part of the vital cultural and natural heritage of Laos and the region. Sayaboury Province in northwestern Laos welcomes you to pay tribute to its elephants and enjoy great cultural activities and entertainment. For more information

Vat Phou Festival
(23 January – 2 February 2007) This festival, one of the largest in the entire country, attracts thousands of religious pilgrims each year to the ancient ruins of Vat Phou Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Attractions include Buddhist ceremonies, cultural performances, local games and sport and a large handicraft market. Vat Phou is located in Champasak District along the Mekong River in Champasak Province approximately 40 km south of Pakse. |

That Sikhottabong Festival
(25 January – 2 February 2007) During the full moon in February (or the third lunar month of the Lao calendar) the spectacular That Sikhottabong festival is celebrated over several days. This is a special time to pay homage to one of the most sacred Buddhist stupas in the region, That Sikhottabong, located in Thakek town, Khammouane Province in central Laos. Activities and events will be held from 25 – 30 January. Traditional religious services will be held from 31 January – 2 February. |
