Ecotourism Laos is adding more online maps of provinces, tour circuits, regions, and major towns. In January, the site uploaded maps of Houaphanh, Savannakhet, Salavan, and Sayabouly Provinces along with more detailed maps of their provincial centers and tour circuits. Maps of the Tea Caravan Trail, through Bokeo and Luang Namtha Provinces, are also available. Maps of Siphandone (4,000 Islands) in Champasak Province are in the pipeline.

Luang Namtha to Host Tai Dam Festival:

Luang Namtha’ Tai Dam Festival, the province’s largest celebration held every three, will take place from 4-6 February 2011 at Ban Tong Chai Tai located 2 km northeast of Luang Namtha Town. The festival attracts more than 1,00 ethnic Tai Dam wearing traditional clothing, who participate in a variety of time-honored activities.

The province recently held an Ethnic Traditional Show and Local Food Festival on 29-31 December 2010, at the provincial capital’s Night Market. Some 17 ethnic groups participated in the event that featured traditional performances and more than 20 types of local food. This follows a successful pilot exhibition of local handicrafts in August 2010.

Lao Cooking and the Essence of Life:

Xaixana Champanakhone’s has released “Lao Cooking and the Essence of Life”, a 207-page book with accompanying DVD synthesizing Lao food with the country’s culture in a personable narrative that is informative and enjoyable, while presenting easy-to-follow recipes in a commentary style.

When asked why he wrote the book, Xaixana said, “There is to-date no book available about Laos which is written with insight, respect, and deep appreciation in discovery of the wonder that is Lao people's attitude to life.”
