Khmu, Hmong, and Lao
Xaysomboune Special Zone is, according to the lucky few who have
traveled there, the most beautiful area in Laos, with its
dramatic mountain peaks and plateaus.
Xaysomeboune has Laos' highest
mountain peak, Phou Bia, at 2,819 m. Most people in Xaysomboun are
ethnic minorities, with 55% Hmong, 19% Khmu and only 26% lowland Lao.
Xaysomboune was opened to tourists in 2000, however there are still some areas in the
province that are off limits. It is important to visit the provincial tourism office to inquire
about open areas or book a tour through a licensed tour company.
Rafting trips have recently been opened on the Nam Ngum River. Other major natural attractions of note are
the Tad Phouyathao and Longsan waterfalls, Chao Anouvong Cave, and Pha Hom
Hot Springs.
