Xayaboury has a very rugged landscape with forested
mountains, and it is known for the production of rice, cotton, peanuts, sesame, maize and
oranges. Tteak forests cover large parts of the province.
The Nam Phui National Protected Area is home to wild elephants, gibbons, gaur and
other large animal species. Elephant rides are available Hong Sa town, and the province holds an annual elephant festival in February.
One of the last remaining hunter-gatherer groups in Southeast Asia, the Malabri, iinhabit the forests in the western part of the province.
