Ecotourism Laos Wins Again
Ecotourism Laos was declared the winner of Planeta.com’s annual Ecotourism Spotlight Award for the third consecutive year with 41.3% of the vote in an announcement to underscore best practices from government institutions during World Tourism Day on 27 September.

In presenting the award, Planeta.com noted that the Lao National Tourism Administration continually revises www.ecotourismlaos. com, which shows how any good website must be regularly updated to maintain its effectiveness.

Book Your Room on Ecotourism Laos

Ecotourism Laos has teamed up with www.laos-hotel-link.com to offer an online accommodation booking service. Site visitors can now reserve rooms in Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng to fit any budget and taste, from US$5 bungalows and guesthouses to upscale boutique hotels and riverside villas. Champasak accommodation will be available in November.

This hotel booking engine is part of Ecotourism Laos’ Cost Recovery Plan, which seeks to engage the private sector to help maintain the site

UNWTO Endorses Vientiane Declaration

In a letter to LNTA Chairman H.E. Somphong Mongkhonvilay, World Tourism Organization Secretary General Taleb Rafai said the UNWTO fully endorses the Vientiane Declaration on Ecotourism in Developing Countries, and will disseminate the Declaration among its members and through its website, http://www.world-tourism.org/.

Mr Rafai said: “This Declaration reaffirms the principles and guidelines developed by UNWTO during the International Year of Ecotourism 2002, providing fresh recommendations to enable stakeholders to not just advocate the principles of sustainable development of tourism, but also to deliver on the vision and goals of the World Ecotourism Conference in an effective manner.”

Oars in the Mekong

The annual Mekong Boat Racing Festival was held on 5 October, following Boun Ok Phansa, a holiday that marks the end of the three-month Buddhist Lent. Vientiane sealed off Fa Ngum Road along the Mekong to accommodate thousands of spectators, who packed the riverfront to see the longboats manned by some 50 people stroke their way down the river. A myriad of food stalls, games, rides and vendors presented a carnival-like atmosphere in Vientiane's main tourist area for the event..
