Silk Weaving on Don Kho
< < Back

Handicraft Name: Silk Weaving on Don Kho

Ethnic Group: Lao Loum

Location: Don Kho Island , Champassak Province

Map of Pakse (Champassak) Environs

Description: Don Kho is one of the most important places for traditional silk weaving in Champassak Province, if not the southern region of Laos, and creates spectacular patterns such as the moon pattern. Visiting the island, one can take a brief walk around and find women weaving in the shade underneath their houses. Homestays are available on the island and include homemade food and a tour of the island's attractions. For those staying overnight it is possible to have your homestay family teach you how to weave. Just ask. From Pakse town one can hire a tuk tuk to Ban Saphai (about 15 km away) and then take a short boat ride across the Mekong River to Don Kho.
