Map of Luang Namtha Province
Description: The traditional Hmong wooden musical instrument, called the ' kaen ' in Lao, is typically used in New Year's celebrations and funeral ceremonies and is handmade in Ban Tha Luang village in Vieng Phoukha District. These instruments, which are made out of bamboo, produce a very broad range of sounds and require a lot of skill to play. The village also produces very ornate and colorful women's clothing and men's long-sleeved jackets, primarily worn during special occasions and festivals. Ban Tha Luang can be reached from Vieng Phoukha town by bicycle or motorbike (see the map). You can also take a guide from town for a full-day visit to the village and its nearby caves and forests (see tour to Phou Prasat Cave link above).
