This peaceful island, located across the Mekong River from Vat Phou, offers alternative activities and accommodation in the Vat Phou Conservation Area. Enjoy the island’s tranquil environment, visit its pre-angkorian stupa, or observe the traditional livelihoods of local villagers such as fishing,
basket weaving and rice farming.

Don Daeng Island is located inside the Vat Phou Conservation Area and has some of the area’s important cultural sites. Trained village guides will take you on a tour to see an ancient stupa and a collection of Buddha images located in the center of the island. Also, boat
excursions to the pre-Angkorian Tomo Temple can be arranged by village boatmen.

Enjoy family-style Southern Lao cuisine.

The villagers of Hua Don Daeng Village invite travelers to stay overnight and enjoy their local hospitality. Accommodation is available in either the community lodge, which offers a common room and bathroom facility, or in a homestay setting with local families.
Included in the overnight stay is a family-style meal of Southern Lao cuisine prepared and hosted by the villagers.
NOTE: Although Don Daeng Island is very close to
Champassak district and is easily accessible, please contact the village in advance so that they can prepare for your
arrival. (See the next page for contact details)

Itinerary #1: Arrive at Don Daeng after visiting Vat Phou on Day 1. Overnight in Don Daeng. Day 2 - Tour the island and visit Tomo before returning to Pakse or traveling south.
Itinerary #2: Leave Pakse mid-morning arriving at Don Daeng by noon. Take lunch before
setting out on a locally-guided walking tour of the island, including the island’s archeological sites. In the evening dine with villagers and enjoy traditional hospitality. Day 2: After Lao breakfast, leave for Tomo by boat. Return for small lunch. In the afternoon cross the Mekong and visit Vat Phou.
Itinerary #3: Same as Itinerary #2 but visit Tomo on the first day instead of walking around the island. Depart for Vat Phou in morning on Day 2. |

Easy-moderate: The walk around the island is easy to moderate depending on the distance
covered. River trip to and from the village is easy and safe. |

One change of clothes, sandals for village, good shoes for hiking, sarong for bathing (required for women), mosquito repellent, flashlight, sunscreen/hat, camera, money to purchase
handicrafts; life jackets for those who cannot swim in case of emergency. |
