Day 1:
After an orientation in Savannakhet town, travel with the guide to one of two partner Phou Thai villages in isolated Vilabouli district.
Head out on a rough trek to the remote Phou Thai village, which welcomes trekkers upon arrival.
Experience the rich culture of the Phou Thai people near Muang Vang Ang Kham, an area known as the "Cradle of the PhouThai". Trekkers have the opportunity to observe the local lifestyle, farming methods, silk making and weaving.
The evening presents a memorable cultural exchange, during which visitors learn to speak a few words of Phou Thai and make new friends for life.
Day 2::
After breakfast, continue climbing up the mountain and trekking through a series of rock formations along the range, as the guide tells the epic story of two legendary sisters: Nang Lun and Nang Laa.
En route, pass through different forest types and rocky outcrops to a rock formation believed by some to be a four-lane highway of an ancient civilization.
Enjoy lunch while observing nature, including different birds and tracks of larger animals. Learn about the forest's edible herbs and fruits, and collect them for your dinner prepared by the guide later that evening during a campout on the mountain.
Day 3:
Rise early to listen for singing gibbons, especially in November. After breakfast, walk to Tham Xang See, the elephant scratching cave, where the cave's walls have been rubbed smooth by wild elephants that stay there during the rainy season.
Continue to Tham Phuang Cave for lunch, after which the trek continues to the sacred Hin Lam Phan rock formation that resembles giant mushrooms.
The guide provides instruction on the taboos and appropriate behavior at this sacred place, before setting up camp for the night.
Day 4
After breakfast, trek to Darn Sao Hai (Crying Maiden Peak). The rocky plateau provides trekkers with an extensive view over the forest to the south and east down to theSavannakhet plains.
Learn the legend of the crying maiden before trekking on to Darn Nang Ngoi plateau to see sweeping views of Khammouane province and the Annamite Mountains between Laos and Vietnam.
Explore Tham Pah Buddha Cave before descending to a village, meet the community guides and enjoy an overnight home stay experience.
Day 5
After breakfast, learn more about village life before saying farewell and traveling back to Savannakhet town on a very rough road.
