Trekking in Phou Hin Poun Protected Area

Explore Khammouane province's Phou Hin Poun Protected Area on this two-day trek led by local ecotourism guides to the Limestone Forest, Tham Pa Chan and Tham Kainao Caves, Muang Pone Stupa, Kuhn Kong Leng Lake and the Kon Keo rapids, with and overnight stay in a remote village.

Itinerary

Day 1: Trekking around Ban Na

Nam Dom River, Khammouane Province

Depart Thakhek by tuk tuk driving east into the Phou Hin Poun Protected Area, stopping along the way to visit Tha Falang, a scenic river area.

Arrive at Ban Na village and join the village guides. Follow the Nam Don River to visit caves, swimming holes and a historic stupa . Along the way, trekkers will learn about local plants and animals. Lunch is served on the trail at a cave.

Return to Ban Na in the late afternoon in time to explore the village and observe the community's traditional way of life. The villagers cook dinner and organize a traditional baci ceremony and cultural performances before visitors overnight in simple village accommodation.

Day 2: Kuhn Kong Leng Lake

Limestone Cave in Khammouane ProvinceAfter breakfast, the trek continues through mountains and bamboo forests to Na Kue village, before continuing to the pristine Kuhn Kong Leng Lake to relax.

Return to Na Kue village for lunch, and then take a tractor ride to the head of the trail to the Khon Keo River. Arrive at Khon Keo rapids in the late afternoon. A short walk leads to Khon Keo village where transportation awaits for the ride to Thakhek.

Accommodation & Food

  • Lodges with one common room.

  • Common bathroom facilities available. Public bathing (women need a sarong)

  • Local Lao cuisine. Typical meal includes chicken, soup, sticky rice, vegetables and chili.

  • Vegetarian food available upon request.

Level of Difficulty & Safety

Moderate: Climbing is moderate-easy but the length of the trek makes this trail challenging. Trekkers must be in good physical shape and be able to walk 5 hours per day.

What to Bring

One change of clothes, sandals for the village, good shoes for hiking, sarong for bathing (required for women), mosquito repellent, flashlight, sunscreen/hat, camera, money to purchase handicrafts. Please wear long pants and shirt with sleeves during the trek.

Includes

Local meals, water, accommodation, transport to/from Khammouane, local guide(s) and English speaking guides, baci ceremony and permit fees.

Group Size

Group size is a minimum of two and a maximum of eight persons.
