Nam Ha Forest camp

Trek in the Nam Ha NPA with Akha and Khamu guides, and spend the night in a bamboo and wood camp built by the villagers.

This journey into the Nam Ha NPA in Luang Namtha Province can be done as a 3-day/2-night trek or a 2-day/1-night trek. Spend the first night in a remote location, 3-4 hours away from the road by foot.

Itinerary

Day 1: Camp

The Nam Ha Forest Camp built by local villagers

Depart Luang Namtha by tuk-tuk driving north into the Nam Ha Protected Area.

Meet the village guides/forest interpreters at Nammat Kao village, and hike into the mountains of Nam Ha, taking time to learn about the plants and animals. Collect wild herbs and vegetables for dinner, and cook over an open fire with Khamu hosts

Spend the night at the camp built out of bamboo and wood by the villagers. It is a very relaxing place to immerse yourself in the beauty of the jungle, and fall asleep to the sounds of the forest. .

Day 2: Akha Village

Wake early to watch the sunrise from atop the mountains above the camp. Explore nearby forests or help village cooks prepare breakfast. Learn how to make bird calls from the villagers.

Depart on a moderate walk through the Nam Ha forest. Arrive at Nammat Mai village (Akha). Tour the village or just relax and enjoy the simplicity of Akha life. Share a meal of fresh organic food with village hosts, and relieve your body's aches with atraditional Akha massage. Retire to the village lodge for a good night's rest.

Day 3

Descend from the mountains of Nam Ha through colorful forests, catching sweeping views of Luang Namtha. Arrive in Luang Namtha by foot following the same path used everyday by villagers taking their forest products and crafts to the market.

Accommodation & Food

  • Lodge with common rooms, one for men and one for women.

  • Common bathroom facilities available. Bathing in nearby stream.

  • Local Lao meals includes chicken, soup, sticky rice, vegetables and chili.

  • Vegetarian food available upon request.

Level of Difficulty & Safety

Moderate-Difficult: Hiking in the Nam NPA is moderately difficult, with some uphill climbs involved. Trekkers must be in good shape.

What to Bring

Two changes of clothes, sandals for the village, good shoes for hiking, sarong for bathing (required for women), mosquito repellent, flashlight, sunscreen/hat, camera, and money to purchase handicrafts. Please wear long pants and shirt with sleeves during the trek.

Includes

Local meals, water, accommodation, transport to/from Luang Namtha, local guide(s) and English speaking guide(s) and permits.

Group Size

Group size is a minimum of four and a maximum of eight persons. For groups smaller than four, please contact the Guide Service Unit to inquire about arrangments.
