Dong Na Tad Forest Treks & Home Stays

Select from four treks in Dong Na Tad Forest around Savannakhet, visit the province's sacred Tat Ing Hang Stupa, experience forest life and spend the night in a village home stay.

Program #1: 1 Day

Nong Lom Lake in Savannakhet

The Honey Trail to Nong Lom Lake

Depart the Savannakhet Provincial Tourism Office with a local guide at 8:00 am by tuk tuk, and visit a salt mine, where ancient methods are still being used.

Upon arrival at Dong Na Tad Forest, enjoy a morning snack and learn about the area's nature.

Continue the trek around lovely Nong Lom Lake, and learn about the villagers' relationship with the towering emerald forest. Enjoy a typical lunch, while listening to the traditional legend of the lake. Trekkers can help the guides collect herbs to flavor the lunch.

After lunch, walk to Ban Tat and learn about the villagers' life. Meet the locals and join in discussions to gain insight into the spiritual heart of Savannakhet, Tat Ing Hang Stupa, and its peaceful Buddhist atmosphere.

Continue trekking to Ban Phonsim, and visit the ancient ruins and old city walls of Muang Kao, the historic birthplace of Savannakhet's lowland Lao and home to 400-year-old mango trees.

Return to Savannakhet in the evening.

The remarkable Dong Na Tat Forest in Savannakhet

Dong Na Tad Forest Temples, Traditions and Trekking

Depart Savannakhet Provincial Tourism Office at 8:00 am by tuk tuk,and travel to meet the local guides at the Ecotourism Information Center.

After a short briefing, enter the remarkable Dong Na Tad Forest, where towering trees shade the trail, and learn about the "magic torch trees".

Walk around Nong Lom Lake and see how the local people use the many natural forest products. Listen to the legend of the lake, while enjoying a local lunch.

After lunch, walk to Ban Tat and learn about the villagers' life. Meet the locals and join in discussions to gain insight into the spiritual heart of Savannakhet, Tat Ing Hang Stupa, and its peaceful Buddhist atmosphere.

Homestay in the Spiritual Heart of Savannakhet

Join a traditional baci ceremony for good luck.

Day 1

Depart the Savannakhet Provincial Tourism Office with a local guide at 8:00 am by tuk tuk, and visit a salt mine, where ancient methods are still being used.

Upon arrival at Dong Na Tad Forest, enjoy a morning snack and learn about the area's nature.

Continue the trek around lovely Nong Lom Lake, and learn about the villagers' relationships with the towering emerald forest. Enjoy a typical lunch, while listening to the traditional legend of the lake. Trekkers can help the guides collect herbs to flavor the lunch.

After lunch, walk to Ban Tat and meet the home stay families. Meet the locals and join in discussions to gain insight into the spiritual heart of Savannakhet, Tat Ing Hang Stupa, and its peaceful Buddhist atmosphere.

Later in the day, join in activities unique to this village such as making a magic torch or helping with the field work.

In the evening, join a traditional baci ceremony for good luck, safe travels and happiness. Learn to speak a few words of Lao and make friends for life.

Day 2

Wake up early and join the Buddhist tradition of giving alms to monks in the morning. After breakfast, head off to Ban Phonsim village and experience the local lifestyle.

Continue trekking to Ban Phonsim, and visit the ancient ruins and old city walls of Muang Kao, the historic birthplace of Savannakhet's lowland Lao home to 400-year-old mango trees.

Trek to the final destination, Nong Tao, and enjoy a refreshing swim and a great view.

Village Home Stay and Turtle Lake

Learn how Savannkhet villagers use the forest

Day 1

Depart Savannakhet Provincial Tourism Office at 8:00 am by tuk tuk,and travel to meet the local guides at the Ecotourism Information Center.

After a short briefing, enter the remarkable Dong Na Tad Forest, where towering trees shade the trail, and learn about the "magic torch trees".

Walk around Nong Lom Lake and see how the local people use the many natural forest products. Listen to the legend of the lake, while enjoying a local lunch.

Continue through the forest and learn interesting facts about jungle life and local beliefs before arriving at Phonsim village, where trekkers meet the home stay hosts, freshen up, and head out to explore the village.

In the evening, join a traditional baci ceremony for good luck, safe travels and happiness. Learn to speak a few words of Lao and make friends for life.

Day 2

Rise early and join the host family in the ancient tradition of giving offerings to the monks for good luck. Before breakfast, journey to the ancient ruins and old city walls of Muang Kao, the historic birthplace of Savannakhet's lowland Lao and home to 400-year-old mango trees.

Trek through the forest to Turtle Lake and eat breakfast while enjoying the view from the water's edge. Continue to Ban Tat Village and inspect the ancient Tat Ing Hang Stupa, the atmospheric heart of Savannakhet.
