Trek along the Nam O River and up an old Akha trail to the mountain top Akha Phouli village of Ban Nam Lo for 2 nights, and head through a bamboo forest to a limestone cave on this 3-day adventure.

Itinerary

The Nam Mai River in Vieng Phoukha

Day 1:
Depart at 8:30 from the Eco-Guide Service office on a transfer by pick-up (or tuk-tuk) to Ban Nam O, a traditional Khmu Kwaen village. The first village-based guide joins the group, and the first half of the day follows the meandering Nam O River and its lush valley.

Pause for a Lao-style picnic lunch on the way before hiking across several ridges offering with panoramic views of the Nam Ha NPA forests. The well-worn Akha trail continues past a temporary settlement of the upland rice farmers from Ban Nam O.

By late afternoon, trekkers reach a lodge on the top of a mountain at the Akha Phouli village of Ban Nam Lo. A traditional Akha dinner cooked by the villagers marks the end of an adventurous first day. Overnight in an Akha lodge.

Day 2:
Rise early to listen for black-cheeked gibbons. Tour the village before setting off to a second Akha and Khmu village, Ban Taleng, where lunch is served. The walk continues through primary and secondary forest to “Pa Mai Hok”, a bamboo forest area. Overnight in Ban Thong Lat.

Day 3:
After breakfast, trekkers can choose to walk to the Phou Song Phan waterfall located in the Nam Ha National Protected Area. Lunch is provided back in Thong Lat village.

For those who prefer to return earlier, walk on a rough road following the Nam Mai River that winds its way down from Ban Thong Lat. This pleasant and easy trek passes through a landscpe of limestone mountains, bamboo forest and upland rice fields. Upon reaching the Nam Mai River, a Lao-style picnic lunch is served.

The pick-up awaits on the other side of the river and heads to the Prasat Cave, the final stop before returning to Vieng Phoukha in the mid-afternoon.
